PIREP Vic: Straw 11

Photo: Parked by the Old Lady's cabin, in Eagle Island.
Hello Boss,

I left Kaltag at noon and headed down the river again to Eagle Island. Perfectly clear weather again today. When I got over the Island, it seemed the wind was pretty calm looking at the smoke from the fire, so I circled a bit to the south of the island, came around, and was set up for a smooth landing but a gust of wind caught my left wing and I caught the right tire of the cessna on the edge of that runway. No damage to the aircraft, but really put a gouge in the mud, and the lady came running out with not a happy expression on her face.

I introduced myself and explained to her that I am new to this bush flying stuff...it still didn't seem to help much until I reached back into the rear of the plane and brought out that bottle of brandy that you suggested. Still a bit of a frown on her face, so to sweeten things even more, I also gave her a bottle of Bailey's. That did the trick.

Stayed a bit and we had a some coffee. She had it with Bailey's; I of course couldn't share the Bailey's because I was on duty. She didn't appear too interested in sharing it with me, anyway. We chatted about this and that and I wanted her to talk more about the Iditarod, but generally all she wanted to talk about was "that nice Captain Butler".

Just finishing up so I'll wipe the mud off that wheel and see if I can get this thing off the ground and over to Unalakleet.
